If the working volume of such a device is rather low, the tower construction is recommended, which allows larger fans. Larger fans mean a slower rotation speed to move the same amount of air – this is quieter. From the small servers In terms of performance, IT managers can expect something from the small servers. So far, Dell has offered the Poweredge T110 server as an entry-level device, currently in version II.

Usually, the expansion stage for such a server is rather low: Intel Core i3 or smaller Xeon-E3-1220 processors, 4 to 8 GB of RAM and one or two SATA – hard drives. If it weren’t for the iDRAC cards for remote access and full compatibility with VMware Vsphere, the administrator could easily mistake these computers for a standard PC. In the performance class above, the company based in Round Rock in the USA positions the Poweredge 3xx series, which got fresh growth with the 330s in mid-November. The Poweredge T330 is a single-processor tower server for the current E3-1200-v5 series.

Four fast DDR4 memory DIMM slots and up to eight hot-plug 3.5-inch HDD slots are available. The eight slots for hard disks in particular make the new device stand out from the T110-II series, whose maximum of four slots are not hot-pluggable. A double, redundant power supply is also not available in the small server version, but for the new 330 series in the form of a 350 watt PSU or a double supply with 495 watts each. The new 330 servers are therefore well equipped for selected customers such as small and medium-sized companies or ROBO (Remote Offices / Branch Offices, i.e. branch offices). It is easy to connect both externally with eight USB ports, three in the USB 3.0 and five in the 2.0 variant, as well as internally.

There are a total of four connections on the motherboard: 1 × 8 PCIe 3.0 (x16 connector), 1 × 4 PCIe 3.0 (x8 connector), 1 × 4 PCIe 3.0 (x8 connector) and 1 × 1 PCIe 3.0 (x1 connector). The board is based on the current Intel C236 chipset, which offers up to eight SATA 6G ports. The test system from Dell was equipped with only two SAS hard drives from Seagate of the type ST2000NM0023, each with a capacity of 2 TB. For our tests, we initially operated the disks in JBOD mode, connected to the PERC-H730 adapter, which supports the disks with 1024 MB cache memory and is less sensitive to power failures thanks to the battery buffer.

The Xeon E3-1230 v5 CPU built into our test machine offers four cores and, thanks to Hyper Threading, a total of eight logical processors, all at a clock frequency of 3,407 GHz. The chipset supports a maximum of 64 GByte RAM of the DDR4 type, organized on four RAM slots – our test computer came with 16 GByte to two 8 GByte dual-rank DIMMS with 2,133 MHz and a “single-bit ECC” error correction. DDR4 RAM is technically superior to its predecessor and delivers up to 33 percent faster memory performance. With regard to the operating systems, the manufacturer is adding Red Hat Enterprise Linux and VMware Vsphere 2015 to the compatibility list in addition to Windows from version 2008R2 SP1. For hypervisor use, Dell specifies Hyper-V under Microsoft Windows, Citrix Xenserver and VMware Vsphere ESXi in the product specifications.

The administrator connects an ISO file via the Java remote maintenance console, which the server accesses during the boot process. For the ESXi installation, we first downloaded the adapted ISO from the Dell homepage. This ensures that all necessary driver components for Dell servers are automatically available. In our case it was a “Dell Customized Image ESXi 6.0.0 A00 (based on ESXi 6.0.0 VMKernel Release Build 2494585)”.

Less than 15 minutes later we were able to reach the server via a Vsphere client and start installing the guest operating system. The installation of a complete Windows Server 2012 R2 in this way takes a lot longer, which is probably due to the speed when accessing the ISO via network. Overall, iDRAC 8 convinces with functions and overviews. All the details that an administrator needs from a server in day-to-day business, The built-in remote management also provides, for example, a graphical overview of the measured energy consumption in the last hour, the last day or the last week.

The current monitoring provides cumulative values ​​for the total consumption, information on peak values ​​and trend values. In normal operation – as with our test system – the T330 only consumed between 42 and 56 watts. The own log also shows, for example, when the server lost a redundant power supply. As a target for syslog messages, the web interface offers space for three servers.

Convincing measurement data For a performance measurement, we used the newly installed Windows Server 2012R2 as a virtual machine on the ESX6i – with eight assigned cores and 8 GB of RAM. The constellation reached 10 in the CPU Mark. 091 points, in comparison, an Intel Core i7-3770K with 3.5 GHz achieves a result with 10.385 that is just 2.9 percent better. Our VM got 17,463 points in the integer math and 7,394 points in the floating point math test – all very good values. The performance values ​​for RAM memory access in the Memory Mark are around twelve percent above the value of a 16 GByte PC3-12800 module from the manufacturer Skill, with 2,619 points.

Since the Pass-Mark 8 test in the “Disk” area produced rather implausible results because it was too positive, we resorted to the Crystal Disk Mark 3.0.3 for x64 processors. The virtualized 500 GB hard drive comes with sequential read access to 241 MB / s and 123 MB / s with write access. A RAID 0 array spanned over the two SAS disks, defined in the virtualized Windows Server 2012R2, reaches 374 MB / s in sequential read access and at least 334 MB / s in write access. Overall, these are very good values ​​- in comparison, SSDs deliver 475/415 MB / s, but do not offer twice 2 TB of storage space at such a price.

The measurement results in a virtualized landscape were very good overall, but we still wanted to display the native results and installed Windows 2012R2 directly on the server and activated a fail-safe RAID 1 hard drive network with 1.81 TByte capacity in advance. For the new chipset, the first thing to do was to download the appropriate drivers, which can be found on the Dell website. Interestingly, the results measured directly on the hardware were below the virtualized values: 9. 820 in the CPUMark, 17,474 in the integer math and 7,522 in the floating point math test. In the memory mark, however, the result increased to 2,824 points.

Despite a rebuild, the Crystal Disk Mark achieved a very good 434 MB / s in the sequential read process and 184 MB / s in the write process in RAID operation. As always, it is pointed out at this point that benchmark results allow machines to be compared with one another, but are less meaningful in practice. The speed for installing a Windows Server 2012R2 on a VMware ESX6i system is very practical. The VM, equipped with eight CPU cores, 8 GB of RAM and a virtual 500 GB hard disk, provided with “thick provision lazy zeroed”, took just seven minutes in our test environment.

Particularly useful in smaller environments: the functionality of the iDRAC controller via the integrated web page. The Dell system BIOS now looks like its own small operating system. Administrators can also adjust all conceivable settings remotely.
