Print, scan, copy: a proper multifunctional device belongs in every household. Why? Scanning in certificates, copying certificates or just printing out a photo – three of many work processes that a multifunction printer has to do at home all the time. Mid-range models such as the Canon Pixma TS8340, which are said to be characterized by high print quality at moderate costs and are more versatile than classic all-in-one printers, are very popular. But is that really true?
The tested the Canon Pixma TS8340, which is almost identical to the Canon Pixma TS8240 that had already been testedis. Canon Pixma TS8340: Easy to use
Canon estimates the non-binding retail price for the Pixma TS8340 at 195 euros, the street price at the time of the test was around 170 euros. The Japanese deliver the Pixma in black (the TS8340 model tested here), white (TS8351) and red (TS8352). But regardless of the color: The Canon multifunctional device cuts a fine figure right out of the box: Its dimensions of 37x30x62 centimeters are comparatively compact, and the Japanese manufacturer has designed the case in a modern way.
But how easy is commissioning? It used to be a test of patience, but with the Canon Pixma TS8340 there were no problems: unpack, remove the transport locks, insert the cartridges, connect the PC to the printer, done. The connection works via USB cable or wirelessly via WLAN. And, as already mentioned above.
Direct connection via Bluetooth
In addition to WLAN, the Pixma has Bluetooth for quick printouts from smartphone or tablet on board. It was also very easy to set up in the test. First activate Bluetooth in the printer settings, then download, install and start the “Canon Print” app. On the start screen, tap on “More” and then on “Bluetooth setup” and follow the instructions.
The direct connection between the TS8340 and smartphone or tablet is established in two minutes. Printing only works from the “Canon Print”. This means that users have to save the documents and photos to be printed beforehand. Direct printing from an application, for example an e-mail such as HP Smart allows, is not possible.

Easy scanning
The Canon Pixma TS8340 also has a large touchscreen with a display diagonal of 11 centimeters. The menu is simple and self-explanatory, making it easy to use. Operations such as scanning fold so easily: lid, document it, the menu scanning and to PC choose done case. Photos and documents can be stored on memory cards – a card reader is located on the front of the device at the bottom left. An automatic document feeder is missing, however. Users have to pack each page individually on the glass plate.
Copy with the correct amount of paper
For a duplicate, however, users would simply have to tap Copy on the touchscreen. The testers thought. The TS8340 did not pull paper from the front cassette when copying. In the storage compartment there had to be paper at the top back, only then did the Canon print the copy. Users do not have to pull out the paper holder for ejection at the front: it automatically pulls out as if by magic – and when it is switched off, it comes back in again after confirming the process on the display.
High print quality
Much more important: a 1A print quality. After all, the unforgettable holiday picture with a yellow beach, green palm trees and blue sea should lie true to the original in the paper ejection – and not a blurred photo with yellow mud and gray soup. Overall, the Canon Pixma TS8340 delivered good results: it brought the edges of letters and objects to paper sharply and without fringes, and it printed surroundings and people with natural colors.
In addition to classic photos, the Pixma TS8340 can be used to print blank CDs and DVDs. The input tray is located under the paper ejection tray on the front of the device. The TS8340 can also be used to print T-shirts – provided that the appropriate film or transfer paper is used for white or colored T-shirts ( five copies are available in the package for well under 10 euros ).
The Pixma TS8340 delivered quite decent results in the test. You can beautify your fingernails with the appropriate stickers and the Nail Sticker Creator App. The so-called Printable Nail Stickers (twelve for around 10 euros) can be placed in the feed tray for printing, which the TS8340 uses for printing CDs and DVDs.
