If you want to put photos on paper professionally, a standard inkjet printer is no longer sufficient. Canon steps into the breach here and brings with the imagePROGRAF Pro-300 a device that not for nothing has the word “Pro” in its name twice.

The device, which costs between 700 and 800 euros, prints a variety of print media, but feels most comfortable with thick photo paper. The application of paint is extremely precise and details come into their own on printouts. A total of ten different color cartridges work inside, which optimizes the color space and helps to bring images onto paper true to the original. This photo specialist hardly has any office skills. Not even duplex printing is offered. The network can be accessed either via LAN or WLAN.
Many printers are now also able to print on photo paper. The image quality leaves a lot to be desired, especially with laser printers. If you want to regularly print large-format photos at home, it is worth investing in a professional photo printer.
Although there is also the option of having photos printed by online services, you cannot check whether the photo actually looks the way you want it to. However, if you have a photo printer in your study, you can change settings yourself until the desired image quality is achieved. Of course, this requires a lot of attention to detail and enthusiasm for photos.
Really high quality photo printers are quite expensive, and not just to buy. The printing costs in particular are expensive if you use them frequently. A printout on good photo paper can cost a few euros. We looked at 11 photo printers, which are in a wide price range and all come from either Canon or Epson. There is something here for amateur photographers and professionals alike.
The imagePROGRAF 300-Pro Canon’s versatile, well made and easy to use. The integrated display, in particular, makes operation much easier and ensures that even those new to photo printing will get along with the Canon.
Regardless of whether it is high-gloss or matt: the Canon photo printer can handle both media and brings strong, but by no means too strong, colors to the paper. But not only the colors of the printouts are convincing, but also their sharpness and richness of detail are at an extremely high level. Even skin tones look natural.
Because the Canon does not work with DYE, but with pigment ink, the black, which is so important for a coherent image impression, appears much richer and more intense. Apart from the expensive Epson models, no photo printer has conjured up such a neutral black and white result on paper as the Canon. When printing in black and white, only gray and black inks are used to rule out color casts.

The Canon photo printer had no problems with our test image. There are no visible gradations in the gray gradient, but when displaying a blue sky one can see slight nuances of a tonal breakdown.
With Ethernet and USB connections as well as a built-in WLAN antenna, the photo printer is also well positioned in terms of connectivity. It is true that you have to do without a touch-sensitive display, such as that found in the Epson models, but the Canon can be operated easily and intuitively even without this extra.
We found the frequent maintenance cycles that the printer allowed to be a bit annoying. A feature that will probably not be used very often in photo printers is printing from a cell phone. But that also worked very well in the test, regardless of whether from the Android or Apple smartphone. Because the printing costs are roughly on par with the Pixma 10S, the imagePROGRAF 300-Pro can be recommended with a clear conscience.
The SureColor SC-P700 is very similar to the SC-P900, the only difference between the two models is the largest possible paper format they can handle and, in the case of the SC-P700, the spindleless roll paper feed.
The smaller of the two Epson photo printers weighs around 13 kilograms and makes a significantly more valuable impression than its predecessor, the design has remained true to the design of the previous generation. Because the printer housing, apart from a small area on the front of the printer, is kept in matte black, fingerprints have significantly less chance than is the case with models with a piano lacquer look.
The touch-sensitive screen of the Epson photo printer can be folded up. Its resolution is sufficiently large and the color rendering fits so far. With USB, WLAN and Ethernet, the usual suspects are also on board when it comes to interfaces. With the help of the iPrint app, printing from your mobile phone is also no problem. A big advantage compared to the previous generation are the two print heads for black.
While the predecessor still had a printhead responsible for matt and glossy black, these tasks are now shared by two different printheads. The color set used in Canon’s photo printer consists of ten different, pigment-based inks.
