Finally a 4K picture, even though the laptop does not have a high-resolution monitor: This is made possible by Lenovo’s handy dock, with which notebooks can control a 4K monitor, Gigabit Ethernet and up to six other USB devices via a single USB-C cable.

The black, small box optically matches the Lenovo laptops: the typical Thinkpad logo adorns the top, the matt plastic surface has a pattern similar to the palm rests of the notebooks. The device stands on four rubber feet. As a result, the dock always remains stable on the desk and does not slip away.

With dimensions of around 17 × 8 × 3 cm, the dock is hardly bigger than a hand and thus remains small enough to be carried around like a laptop. It weighs just under 300 g. It takes up little space on the desk and helps to reduce the cable chaos a little.

The workmanship of the device is very good. The corners are rounded and the plastic housing has no sharp edges or unwanted grooves anywhere. Unfortunately, the dock is prone to scratches. Metallic cable ends simply scratch the back of the dock. You should therefore proceed cautiously when plugging in.

The small dock offers the user many options: Either a monitor with up to Ultra HD resolution (3840 × 2160 pixels at 30Hz) or two monitors with full HD resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels at 60Hz) can be connected via the display port. A VGA connection (1920 × 1200 pixels at 60Hz) is available for older monitors or projectors. The LAN connection provides Gigabit Ethernet.

One of the three USB 3.0 ports is permanently switched on to charge smartphones and the like. In addition, there are two USB 2.0 ports for a mouse and keyboard, for example. A USB-C port is available for data transfers (3A at 5V). Almost all connections are located at the back, there is only a connection for a security cable (Kensington Lock) on the side. In addition to the already mentioned USB 3.0 port and the USB-C data port, a combination connection for headphones and microphone is installed at the front.

A power cable with a 90 watt power adapter is included with the dock. In addition, a double-sided, approximately one meter long USB-C cable is included as an interface between the dock and laptop. The dock supplies the laptop with 60 watts. The laptop’s battery is charged during operation.

We tested the dock on a Thinkpad T470 and were very satisfied with the performance. All connected devices were recognized and were immediately ready for use. During operation, there were no problems with monitors, audio or the Internet. Even under Linux everything ran without problems in the test.

The on / off button on the dock works like the power button on the laptop. Pressing it once puts the laptop into standby mode. If you want to turn off the dock completely, you have to unplug the laptop first. Only Lenovo laptops are officially supported. The dock should also work with other devices, but this can lead to problems with the connection.
